Why Tourism Websites Must Be Ready for AI Travel Search

A website has to do more than look convincing to a visitor. Its facts must also be readable by the machines that retrieve, compare, summarise, and recommend. For tourism businesses, this has stopped being a future concern.

The website's job is now to be readable, verifiable, and quotable by a machine.

A traveller planning a trip to a Maldivian island used to open a search engine, type a query, and browse a page of links. They clicked through to websites, compared options, and eventually booked. The website's job was to look convincing to a human reader.

That sequence is changing. More travellers now ask an assistant where to stay. They type "best guesthouses for snorkelling on this island" into ChatGPT, or "family-friendly half-board near the reef" into Perplexity, or simply let Google's AI Mode assemble the comparison. The system gathers information from several sources, synthesises it, and returns a summary — often quoting a website's own words back to the traveller.

In this second sequence the website's job is different. It still has to convince a human. It also has to be readable, verifiable, and quotable by a machine.

What AI Search Actually Does

Google's AI Overviews, which rolled out across search results from 2024, generate summaries drawn from several web pages at once. The system uses a technique Google calls "query fan-out" — issuing multiple related searches across sub-topics to build a fuller answer. The pages an Overview cites are not necessarily the ones that would rank first in ordinary search; the system may pull in pages that address a narrow slice of the broader question.

Google calls this “query fan-out.” The pages an AI answer cites are the ones that gave a clean, quotable answer to each sub-question — not necessarily the ones that ranked first.

AI Mode, launched in Google Search during 2025, goes further. It offers a conversational search experience powered by a generative model. The traveller can ask follow-up questions, refine their requirements, and receive steadily more specific recommendations, each drawing on retrieved web content.

Beyond Google, assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity work in a similar way. They collect information from web sources, weigh its clarity and reliability, and present it in synthesised form. The traveller does not visit ten websites. They ask one system, and that system reads the websites on their behalf.

What This Means for a Tourism Website

For a guesthouse or excursion operator, the practical consequence is that the website has to serve two audiences at once: the human who lands on it directly, and the machine that reads it to answer somebody else's question.

The machine has different requirements.

Server-rendered content. If a page's content is generated entirely by JavaScript after loading, some crawlers and AI systems cannot read it — it exists in the browser but not in the page source. A server-rendered page, where the HTML already contains the actual content, is legible to humans and machines alike.

Semantic structure. Headings that describe what follows. Lists that separate attributes. Paragraphs that answer specific questions. A machine reading a page about room types needs to tell which text is the room, which is the rate, and which is the policy. Clear structure makes that possible.

Explicit information. "Our rooms offer a beautiful experience" means something to a human and nothing extractable to a machine. "Deluxe Ocean Room: 28 square metres, king bed, private west-facing balcony, sleeps two, breakfast included, rates from $180 per night" gives the machine specific, quotable facts.

Structured data. JSON-LD markup in the page tells search engines plainly what the page is — a lodging business, with a name, address, geo-coordinates, price range, rating, and room types. Google's documentation notes that structured data is not required for AI Overview inclusion, but it is required for rich results, which drive the engagement signals that support visibility.

Readable practical detail. Cancellation policies, check-in times, transfer arrangements, dietary options — these are the exact facts an assistant quotes when a traveller asks "does this property allow late check-out?" or "is breakfast included?" A website that buries them in prose, or omits them, is silent to the systems answering those questions.

The llms.txt Proposal

A newer idea, llms.txt, offers a simple way for a website to hand AI systems a structured summary of its content. Placed at the root of a domain, the file points to what the site is about, which pages matter most, and how the information is organised. It works a little like a sitemap, but written for machine comprehension rather than search indexing.

It is worth being precise about its status. llms.txt is a proposal, published in September 2024, not an adopted standard — and so far no major AI provider has confirmed that its systems read it. Adoption is modest and community-driven. So this is not a ranking mechanism, and it should not be sold as one. What it signals is a direction: websites that want to be legible to AI systems are beginning to offer explicit, structured guidance about their content. For a tourism business, an llms.txt file describing the property, its rooms, its excursions, its policies, and its location is a small, low-risk investment on a bet about where discovery is heading.

What Is Not Yet Certain

It would be wrong to overstate how far this shift has gone. AI Overviews do not appear on every query — Google says they are "only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search," so they often do not trigger at all. Most searches still return traditional results. AI Mode is still expanding. AI travel assistants are used by a growing but still minority share of travellers.

The traditional search-and-browse path is not dead. But it is now sharing the stage with a second one. Properties that prepare for both — websites readable by humans and machines alike — will be ready for whichever path the traveller takes.

The Design Implication

For anyone building or rebuilding a tourism website, the implication is concrete. The site has to work for the human eye and the machine reader at the same time. Every page should pass two tests: can a traveller understand this, and can a system pull the relevant facts out of it?

The answer to both should be yes. When it is, the property is not merely online. It is ready for the way travel discovery is actually shifting. And on a small island, where every place on a shortlist is contested, that readiness is not a technical luxury. It is a commercial necessity.
